Steps

There is no one blueprint for building a child-friendly city. The model and process adopted will depend on the local context and will be influenced by factors such as the political environment, administrative structures, population size and available resources of the city or community. There are, however, common steps that inform the process. These include:

  1. Assessing the situation of children, including them in the process. Looking at what laws, policies and government structures are in place to support their rights and wellbeing.
  2. Developing a strategic action plan
  3. Implementing it with relevant municipal stakeholders including children themselves.
  4. Monitoring and evaluating the results and adjusting the strategic action plan as necessary.

Building a Child Friendly Cities Initiative under the UNICEF banner requires establishing a partnership with UNICEF and obtaining UNICEF recognition if recognition criteria are met.
